"For out of His fullness have all received, and grace in exchange for grace." John 1:16

"Under the realm of the law, each new grace must be obtained at the cost of a new work. In the economy of grace...the gift already received is the one title to the obtaining of a new gift: 'To him who hath, more is given.'" Frederick L. Godet on John 1:16

  1. Grace in exchange for grace,
    Not grace for works of law —
    These gospel tidings we embrace
    And from our toils withdraw;
    Since grace God's work began,
    And grace God's goal achieves,
    And grace will change the vilest man
    Who grace for grace receives.
  2. Grace in exchange for grace,
    Not for our efforts vain —
    Let go! and gaze on Jesus' face,
    Receiving grace again.
    Enjoyment full and free!
    A bountiful supply!
    Lay hold of God's economy
    And be transformed thereby.
  3. Grace in exchange for grace,
    Not for our anxious prayers —
    The Great Physician knows our case
    And heals us unawares.
    No longer need we try
    Poor self to patch and mend;
    Ignore the wretch! Just let it die,
    And failing self transcend.
  4. Grace in exchange for grace,
    Not strife, nor stress, nor strain —
    Lo, Jesus takes the sinner's place
    And lives His life again.
    His glorious victory
    O'er Satan, self, and sin,
    Is reproduced in you and me
    By grace that reigns within.
  5. Grace in exchange for grace,
    Builds up the church of God
    He purchased from our abject race
    With His own precious blood;
    Redeemed from every land,
    And gathered 'round the throne,
    In glory She will ever stand
    By grace and grace along.
